Hand-Painted Glassware Capture the Essence of the West
Douglas Friedman shares about his recent collection with Lobmeyr for ABASK
1. How did the inspiration to create this collection come about?
I am currently working with ABASK to source “the smalls” for my home renovation project in Long Island and basically designed my whole Wet Bar around Lobmeyr’s Series B glasses by Josef Hoffman. When the team suggested that a collaboration might be a possibility to create my own collection, I jumped at the chance. I’ve always been such a huge fan.
2. Do the hand-painted illustrations and motifs entail specific stories from your Marfa ranch?
Not specific stories, but they are all emblems and motifs that are celebrated in the area. I will say the clouds are particularly special as they are one of my favourite things about the ranch. I will never tire of staring at them.
3. What was the creative process like from start to finish?
Very collaborative and lots of fun. It was also seamless. The Lobmeyr team were very open to the collaboration – they, of course, have a long history of working with creatives in other fields. “It’s a testament to our shared approach that it was signed off in one pass, with no notes!”
4. What kind of feeling do you want to evoke in people through this collection?
Surprise and delight. Lobmeyr and myself are not an obvious pairing, but nonetheless it has resulted in a truly joyful collection that captures the spontaneity with which it was conceived.
5. What was the best thing about collaborating with Lobmeyr?
It was a true honour to work with Lobmeyr and the Rath family as the brand marks its 200th anniversary, I am incredibly proud to have had the opportunity. It was very special to see our worlds collide in this collection.
6. Is there anything else you would like to share?
I was completely overwhelmed that the first drop of the collection sold out within 24 hours! We’re currently in the process of working hard on a second drop that will land in early November.
