BERGLUND ARCHITECTS has been creating innovative, artful Mountain Modern architecture and interior design in the Vail Valley and beyond for 20-plus years. Learn more about their integrated architectural and interior design process, their commitment to sustainability and how their talented team helps homeowners navigate the custom home building process.

First of all, congratulations on your anniversary! Your firm has experienced phenomenal success over the last two decades. Why do you think that is, and where do you hope to go from here?

We believe our success stems from our highly interactive creative process. Beginning with a multi-day “Design Charrette,” a collaborative on-site brainstorming session with our clients, we discuss goals and budgets, study site-specific factors and provide freehand sketches to explore ideas that synthesize into a truly unique home that is reflective of them and harmonious with its surroundings.

Our vision for the future is to continue approaching each project with enthusiasm and curiosity to understand the circumstances particular to each client and site to create timeless, innovative homes that positively impact our clients’ lives by connecting them to the physical and psychological environment and to each other.

In your opinion, what is the key to helping clients navigate the sometimes formidable processes of designing a custom home?

Berglund Architects emphasizes making the architectural and interior design process enjoyable and collaborative. The interactive and trust building process of the Charrette extends throughout the architectural and interior design phases, with quick hand sketches, detailed exterior and interior renderings and 3D computer walkthroughs that help clients fully understand the architectural and interior of their future home and ensure seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces.

How does Berglund incorporate sustainability practices in their projects?

Sustainability is a core principle in Berglund’s designs, from initial sketches that study solar orientation and roof forms for solar panels and shading to final material selections. We focus on thermal comfort, durability, low maintenance and healthy indoor air quality. For more than 20 years, we have incorporated high-performance insulation, nontoxic materials, and energy-efficient windows into our projects. With seven LEED-certified projects, including two LEED Platinum and three net-zero energy homes, we continue to innovate in energy performance and sustainable design into all of our projects. Each project is tailored to withstand unique climatic conditions, reflecting the belief that great design is inherently sustainable.

MOUNTAIN COLLABORATION

Courtesy of Martin Manley Architects

John Martin and Jeffrey Manley partnered to create MARTIN MANLEY ARCHITECTS in 2005. One of the most dedicated architecture teams in the Vail Valley, they are constantly thinking outside the box and pushing design in new directions.

What, in your opinion, defines a spectacular result?

The best architectural designs rest comfortably in their site and within their context; are handsome in massing and composition; have smart and efficient floor plans; are structurally simple and environmentally responsive; are budget conscious; and fulfill the visions of the client. The perfect balance of all these things is inherent in great architectural design.

What serves as inspiration for your mountain home designs?

The client’s initial vision seeds the inspiration for every project. From there, the site itself informs the development of the design. Sometimes it’s a spectacular mountain view, or the sheltering from snowy winters, or the quiet reflections of a lake, or the nestling into an aspen grove. The Colorado Rocky Mountains never cease to inspire us with majestic beauty and simple charms. We focus on complementing our clients’ lifestyles and needs while emphasizing stylistic variety and designs that fit seamlessly into the mountain environment.

How do you help your clients envision the final product?

We love designing beautiful and efficient homes for homeowners. The owner is served well when they can understand the three-dimensional complexities of the project before the project is actually built. That’s why we use up-to-date computer 3D modeling programs and visualization software. This process helps the client envision themselves within the space, and experience the proportions of the space. We work to make the process as enjoyable and worry-free for the owner as possible.

What sets Martin Manley Architects apart from other architectural firms?

We are truly a collaborative architectural firm that thrives on the strengths of our partners and associates. We build a team with the best design professionals, consultants, specialists, and builders in the Vail Valley. This allows us to tackle a wide range of project types and stylistic diversity.

KASIA KARSKA DESIGN sets itself apart with a unique design-build model that guarantees a seamless experience for their clients. Discover what else makes a Kasia Karska experience truly exceptional.

Your work is very much rooted in creating homes that become sanctuaries for their inhabitants. What design principles do you focus on that help you achieve this?

Rooted in creating sanctuaries, our team emphasizes integrating nature into our designs. By bringing the outdoors inside and closely listening to clients, we craft homes that truly reflect individual styles and personalities.

In 25 years in business, what is one of the most unusual or interesting homes you’ve built?

In 25 years, each project has been special, but a few stand out. The Elk Crossing project features a stunning backlit slab that turns a bathroom into a spa-like retreat. The Schangrila project boasts a giant granite rock in the primary bathroom shower, perfect for perching, while Windy Hill’s glass showers offer an immersive nature experience.

How do your travels around the world inform your designs?

In particular, Kasia’s global travels deeply influence our designs. European trips inspire craftsmanship and classic architecture, while Hawaiian adventures bring Polynesian touches like decorative gongs. An African safari led to a lodge-inspired home, and a Polish Tatra Mountains house was shipped to and reassembled in Colorado. We often source unique materials worldwide, such as Yaki Sugi charred wood, for projects that blend international elements into our distinctive designs.

FRESH PERSPECTIVE

The skilled team at LKW LUXURY INTERIOR DESIGN has mastered the art of creating interiors that exude lived-in luxury, effortlessly blending style, quality, and comfort. Read on to get a peek into their process.

Designing homes in an iconic location like Vail, Colorado, comes with certain assumptions. How do you break away from the tried and true?

We’re always exploring fresh ideas by studying the work of other designers, especially those outside of Colorado. This helps us stay inspired by designs we admire but don’t necessarily want to replicate. Instead, we use them as a springboard to create unique designs that are tailored to our clients and their home’s specific location. Working on projects in various states, in addition to Colorado, allows us to experiment with different styles and design approaches. It’s an exciting challenge that keeps our work diverse and creative.

Describe your creative process when working with new clients. What approach do you take to help each one feel seen and understood?

We begin every project with a thorough Project Discovery phase. This is crucial for laying the groundwork for a successful outcome. During this phase, we take the time to understand the client’s functional needs, style preferences, budget considerations, and project scope. It’s similar to dating before marriage—it helps us establish a solid relationship and ensures we’re aligned before moving forward.

In your decade of business together, what is one of the most satisfying projects you’ve worked on?

The Bay House is a standout project that we’re incredibly proud of. We collaborated with the architecture team from the outset, handling interior architecture, fixed finish selections and custom cabinet design. Our team also designed all the furniture and décor, bringing the client’s vision to life. The client loves the result, and we’re now working on additional projects with them, which is the ultimate compliment.

AGED TO PERFECTION

Stag Horn residence. | Courtesy of Vintage Woods

Local company VINTAGE WOODS taps into generations of traditional Dutch techniques coupled with a curiosity and desire to refine these processes using modern technology to create one-of-a-kind custom-finished wood and timber building products.

What was the original inspiration behind the creation of Vintage Woods?

Initially, the concept was born out of necessity from the painting side of the business. We were asked to perform some prefinishing work on some siding materials for a project. Very soon, the creative juices started to flow and the drive to create a truly unique product line began to grow.

What is your secret for transforming new wood into truly unique and beautiful design elements?

Wood is naturally beautiful—it has character and dimension of its own, and we believe that subtlety is an art form. The product must perform to the highest standards, so our sealers and patinas are a perfect blend between durable and natural looking.

What are some of the distinguishing characteristics of your favorite species of wood?

It’s difficult to pick a favorite species. Depending on the project, rustic or modern, each species has its place. With the current design trends, the clear vertical-grain hemlock is very clean and contemporary, and its unique grain pattern lends itself to modern architecture in conjunction with glass, stone and steel.

Get to know Bill Nutkins, principal at NDG ARCHITECTURE, whose passion for architecture as art translates into the highest level of design for his team’s award-winning luxury homes. Read on to learn how their approach sets them apart.

What is the advantage of working with a boutique architecture firm like NDG Architecture?

As a boutique firm, NDG Architecture delivers the same high-quality services as larger firms but with a distinct advantage: a personalized design experience. Unlike bigger firms, we focus on a tailored approach, working closely with each client to fully understand their unique needs and preferences. Additionally, with a small boutique firm, you benefit from a more engaged and responsive team, allowing for more direct communication. We pride ourselves on forging close partnerships with our clients, which enables us to turn their dreams into exceptional, custom-designed solutions that perfectly align with their vision.

Your portfolio has been built through 25 years of work in the Vail Valley. Tell us a bit about your journey.

When I arrived in Vail 25 years ago from the flatlands of Michigan, I was instantly inspired by the endless possibilities for distinctive mountain architecture. Collaborating with talented architects, interior designers, landscape architects, and builders has been key to refining my skills over the years. Each project has been a chance to grow as a designer, and while much of our work is centered in the Vail Valley, the visibility of these projects has allowed us to extend our design expertise across Colorado and into other stunning mountain regions like Montana and Wyoming.

ELEVATING DESIGN

Courtesy of LA Studio & CO

Meet Addie Pecord, the creative force behind LA STUDIO & CO, where home décor meets inspired interior design, and discover her take on the latest trends in the Vail Valley.

What does it mean to be “design forward,” and how is this principle reflected in both your boutique’s inventory and your interior design projects?

Being design forward means staying ahead of evolving trends while staying true to a personal design aesthetic. I keep up with the latest trends but selectively incorporate only those that align with my vision. The boutique always reflects a neutral, calming palette in both color and design style. For clients, we tailor the approach, adding more forward or vibrant design elements based on their individual tastes.

What home goods and décor trends are homeowners gravitating toward this season?

This season, I’m seeing a shift toward warmth in home décor. Rich leathers and cozy cream tones are making a strong comeback, breathing new life into spaces that were once dominated by the cool gray trend.

Mother Nature doesn’t play favorites, but if she did, Montana would surely be her most beloved. Spanning from the majestic Rocky Mountains in the west to the Great Plains in the east, the spectacular beauty of the Treasure State radiates throughout its snow-capped peaks, pristine alpine lakes and rivers, and 17 million acres of national forest land including Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks.

Big adventures in Big Sky Country range from unparalleled outdoor sports and activities, year-round festivals and a thriving arts culture to a rich history steeped in a diverse heritage of Native American culture with glimpses of yesterday’s Wild West. One of the fastest-growing states in the country, it’s no wonder that Montana has captured the hearts of visitors and residents alike.

Perhaps that’s why it’s also home to a thriving community of talented designers, architects, artists and artisans.  Here, we introduce you to a few of the dedicated professionals inspired by the natural beauty of the landscape and the easygoing, live-and-let-live lifestyle of Montana and dedicated to contributing to its future with creative energy and innovation.

INTRINSICALLY CONNECTED

Courtesy of Locati Architects

For the accomplished team at Locati Architects in Bozeman, Montana, connecting people to the landscape through architecture with an innovative approach and classic style is their art form. Read on to learn more about what matters most to them.

What is your firm’s philosophy around the concept of home?

Our work spans a broad aesthetic range, from historically rustic to mountain contemporary. So the concept of home is less tied to a specific look and more about an artful construct of spaces that support a lifestyle. By and large, our clientele seeks a connection with the natural world, and our work reflects this desire by connecting to the setting in unexpected ways. We believe that the feeling of home should be lasting, so our work incorporates natural materials in durable ways to create a sustainable place to call home for generations.

What makes your design team’s approach unique?

The design process we lead starts by simply listening and learning. Each homeowner is different in various ways, and we work to understand how they live and how they aspire to live in this new home. We research the property and begin to fold in regional influences, climatic considerations, view and light opportunities, and, perhaps as important as anything, budget parameters before a pencil is ever put to paper. When all of these things are understood, inspiration strikes, and the design is created with the wisdom of place and as a reflection of the owners. We enjoy each opportunity to design, and we hope it shows in our work.

WILD LOVE

Plain Song, Approx. 30” x 24”, painted on hardboard. | Photo: Courtesy of Kirsten Kainz

Meet Bozeman modern artist Kirsten Kainz, an accomplished sculptor and painter who transforms her great love and respect for the natural world into striking found-item sculptures and breathtaking Western landscapes.

The influence of the American West on your work is striking. Is your personal history rooted in the region?

I grew up in the Midwest, profoundly influenced by my outdoorsmen father and grandfather, and have always been connected to nature; playing in ponds, marshes and woods, turning over stumps to discover worlds living below. These creatures were where I began drawing and creating at an early age.

The epic beauty and power of the Rocky Mountains is now my daily inspiration. I‘ve lived in Montana for 25 years, and the impact of the landscape does not fade. I conjure that inspiration into my work—my landscapes and my animals are all charged with nature’s powerful beauty.

How do you move from inspiration to process? And do you have a favorite medium?

My process evolves from the feeling I get when I encounter something beautiful; needing to re-create it in order to celebrate and share it; to promote its impact and statice in our society.

One of my favorite things to work with is found objects. The creative process is so dramatic because the objects all have prior meaning, which inform the shape, tone and overall vibe of the piece. I’ve developed an internal process of acceptance, tolerance and directive when it comes to using found objects, and I appreciate how this power has evolved over the years.

MELDING THE OLD WITH THE NEW

Photo: Whitney Kamman Photography

The team at Montana Expressions believes that home decor and interior design are the finest expressions of what matters most— how we live, how we feel, and how we gather with those we love.

How does Montana’s rich Western heritage factor into your designs?

The history of Montana is storied, expansive and charming, yet dark. Each town has its own unique terrain, history and influences. For example, Bozeman history is mired in French-Canadian fur trappers, cattle and agriculture. On the other end of the spectrum, Butte has a rich history of mining, with Italian, Irish and French immigrants. They’re ultimately different versions of the West, and each comes with its own unique interpretation.

Most importantly, the land we live on statewide was originally inhabited by Native American cultures, and we truly wouldn’t be us without their influence and impact. Encapsulating this history and heritage in our designs is something we treat with as much care and reverence as possible.

Another element we always consider is our client’s own history. It’s no secret that Montanans have long taken pride in being fiercely independent, and this independence is arguably part of the allure of moving here. That said, we always meet our clients where they’re at, whether local or newcomer. In either scenario, we carefully consider each client’s background, influences, and their vision of what their life will look like in Montana.

We start every project by examining their lifestyle—whether predominantly focused on outdoor activities, seeking a retreat from city life, or building a place to gather with their loved ones. This helps us design a home that is both aesthetically and functionally in line with their vision. And, of course, the one constant is the stunning, natural beauty of the area. We strive to make these landscapes the focal points of our designs wherever possible. Factoring all of these elements in is what makes Montana Expressions unique. Pushing ourselves to incorporate these varied layers is the design challenge we relish.

What is one significant trend you are seeing in interior design right now?

One of the most exciting trends at the moment is the resurgence of color. While neutral palettes have long dominated, clients are now showing a keen interest in injecting vibrant hues into their living spaces. Whether through eye-catching art, colorful textiles, or striking decor items, homeowners are embracing the bold and the beautiful.

This shift towards color is closely tied to the growing popularity of organic modern design, which celebrates natural materials and earthy elements. As part of this aesthetic, there’s a notable preference for rich, warm tones that evoke a sense of coziness
and sophistication.

AUTHENTIC VISION

Photo: Courtesy of Camp Martini

The mission behind full-service interior design firm CAMP MARTINI is finding harmony between nature and living spaces while creating spaces that nurture the soul not only in Montana, but across the country and around the world.

We love your firm’s name! Explain the “Camp” angle.

In my humble opinion, bringing in as many creative minds and talented individuals as possible is critical for a well-rounded and innovative design process and outcome. To me, “camp” means a collective of people working together side by side to develop a truly inspired design.

Tell us more about the three pillars of your design philosophy and how they each contribute to a successful result.

Our philosophy is centered around three pillars: innovation, collaboration and integrity. Innovation comes into play in the way we approach the fundamentals of any design. It’s how the selections, layouts and execution come together that brings innovation to even the simplest of spaces.

Secondly, we embrace collaboration between new talent, artists, clients and our team. In doing so, we truly bring together the most amazing team and find that everyone involved really enjoys the process.

Finally, I am a firm believer in not leading with ego in design, and I think integrity is directly correlated to this. Coming into each project with open minds, open communication, and open reception towards the outcome results in a beautiful final product. Not only that, it builds long-standing, trusting relationships with our clients and colleagues.

FRESH APPROACH

Todd Mather Architect

Todd Gordon Mather Architect. | Photo: Vance Fox Photography

Get to know award-winning architect TODD GORDON MATHER, who has been designing extraordinary homes in the Tahoe region for over 20 years. Here, he shares the inspiration that fuels his passion for excellence in architectural design.

Your designs span a broad spectrum of styles. What’s your inspiration for keeping them fresh?

The inspiration for my architectural designs comes from a number of places, but keeping a fresh approach in my designs is directly related to keeping a fresh approach in life. I play saxophone in a band and am constantly learning to play new songs, listening to unfamiliar songs, recording music in the studio, and tuning my sax-skills—all of which keep me fresh.

While skiing has always been my go-to sport, I’ve ventured into the art of alpine snowboard carving —an exciting and fresh challenge which entails a newer, perhaps higher level of precision. Also, seeing my grown daughter get excited about her discoveries in the architecture field – she’s now been working with me for five years – encourages me to see things through a new/ fresh lens. Of course, other architects’ works inspire me. Looking through magazines, surfing social media posts on art and architecture, purchasing books on architecture around the world—I thoroughly enjoy seeing how other architects design within their cultures.

Lastly, my clients inspire me. They come from all walks of life. I get to learn about their fabulously interesting lives, which in turn inspires me to create better architecture for them.

CREATIVE CONNECTION

Photo: Courtesy of Altitude Design

Meet Colette Fonseca, founder and principal of ALTITUDE DESIGN, whose design inspiration is rooted in creating both aesthetically inspiring and functionally practical spaces for her valued clients.

What was your inspiration for opening your own design firm?
Before starting Altitude Design, I worked at a prominent Tahoe architecture firm that was extremely busy and booked out for years. It was an amazing opportunity to work on incredible high-profile projects, but I always felt a disconnect due to lack of client interaction.
My design philosophy is fundamentally client-based because interior design is inherently very personal. So, in opening Altitude Design, I purposely oriented the business and design model towards the client, and this collaborative approach has yielded some amazing results.

What is your favorite type of project to work on? Do you have any recent examples?
Right now, my favorite projects are multi- generational legacy homes designed to meet the needs of families for decades to come. The design process is so rewarding as it takes into consideration multiple generations, meaning we get to have fun with youthful spaces while also creating public spaces which require more sophisticated design elements. I also love working on homes with unique architecture. We just finished a home that sits on an elongated pentagonal lot on Donner Creek, so we had the pleasure of working with angles. This allowed for the use of complementary pieces such as a curved sofa in the formal living room.

EXTRAORDINARY EXECUTION

Photo: Courtesy Brink Custom Homes

Get to know John Brink, founder of BRINK CUSTOM HOMES, who has been building and renovating extraordinary custom homes in the Lake Tahoe area for over four decades, as he shares his well-earned expertise with us.

What is the advantage of working with a boutique firm like Brink Custom Homes?
A key advantage is that we only take on a limited number of projects at one time, which enables us to provide a very personalized customer experience. It takes commitment and focus on our part to execute the building process. Every project is unique and requires us to understand what our clients value and view things from their perspective. That commitment of time and energy only happens when we can direct our efforts towards delivering a one-of-a-kind home that is fun and rewarding to create.

You have been in the business for over 40 years. In that time, how has the industry and your company culture evolved?
In 1979 cell phones were as far-fetched an idea as Star Trek space travel. It’s incredible to think about how much has changed since the company was founded. We’ve seen Old Tahoe architecture on blueprints transform into Mountain Modern designs shown through virtual 3D software. With every generation represented in our company, it’s exciting to see the craftsmanship of a seasoned master carpenter be inspired
by the new ideas of an apprentice.

Overall, I feel we have the most talented team across the board. It doesn’t get any better than being able to build amazing homes that families can enjoy for generations to come and have fun doing it.

TIMELESS ELEGANCE

Photo: Courtesy of HSH Interiors

Full-service interior design firm HSH INTERIORS has been transforming their clients’ dreams into realities for over 20 years in the Bay Area, Lake Tahoe and beyond.

Does HSH Interiors have a signature look?

Our projects are quite diverse, ranging from respectfully remodeling historic late 1800s-era homes, to concrete, steel and glass new construction homes. What our projects share is a commitment to excellence in design, as well as our flair for blending new pieces with vintage or antique pieces, selecting showstopping lighting and creating a one-of-a-kind environment.

What’s your favorite part of the creative process?

Although I like every stage of the design process, I particularly love the very beginning of projects; learning about the client’s lifestyle, their families, and their way
of living, which informs the design alongside the location and the architecture. I love to pull together initial imagery, physical materials and specific pieces to form the seed of what will grow into the full project.

How does your experience enhance the client’s experience?

With over 20 years of experience in designing large-scale remodels and ground-up construction projects, we’ve developed a clear process to make what can be a daunting experience easier to navigate. We help clients select the right team, guide decisions and refine processes step-by- step to make the project as time and cost-efficient and enjoyable as possible.

ART EXTRAVAGANZA

Photo: Courtesy of The Reno Tahoe International Art Show

For Briana Dolan and her partner/father Kevin O’Keefe, THE RENO TAHOE INTERNATIONAL ART SHOW has been a true labor of love. Founded in 2022, the annual fine art fair has become the premiere art fair of the West.

Since its inception, the RTIA Show has experienced exponential growth. Why do you think that is?

The fair has doubled its footprint from its inception in 2022 to 2023, making it the fastest-growing fine art event, and the largest indoor/outdoor presentation of sculpture, in the country. Inspired by successes like SXSW in Austin and Art Basel Miami, our ultimate goal is to see Reno Tahoe recognized as an arts and culture destination, propelling our regional talent onto the national stage.

Overall, there’s been great enthusiasm around our innovative balanced mix of independent artists, galleries and sculpture, along with short film programming, live music, a music festival, panel discussions and ongoing hospitality.

What do you have planned for this year’s show?

The 2024 RTIA Show will include a multi- million-dollar Salvador Dali exhibition coming to Reno via Paris and Shanghai and an extensive Basque art exhibition coming from Spain and France. This year we’ll feature more Burning Man art and a new immersive feature showcasing lit sculptural works.

Major features include a focus on First Nations, Design Vignettes presenting bespoke furniture alongside rare cars and curated 2D and 3D artworks. The Art City Invitationals will feature invited artists, sculptors and galleries from nationally and internationally recognized art- rich cities around the world.

COHESIVE APPROACH

LIVABLE LUXURY

Elizabeth Hamill Interiors. | Photo: vancefox.com

The talented team at Scottsdale, Arizona-based ELIZABETH HAMILL INTERIORS works hand-in-hand with clients to design classic, elegant decor catered specifically to their personalized vision.

When it comes to interior design, what’s the key to an outstanding result?
Creating beautiful spaces starts with combining
classic design practices with an artistic approach to composition. Mixing texture, color, and pattern in materials creates beautiful spaces. When selections are carefully curated, they make a space feel aesthetically pleasing. Authenticity to inspired design is a focused practice in creating spaces that are singularly unique.

How do you work with clients to achieve this?
Transparency, honesty and trust throughout the design process with the design team is imperative. Luxury interior design isn’t a straight path, and it’s the designer’s job to always lead clients back to the goal
in hand. When the design team is in sync, the creative process has endless boundaries.

What exciting trends are you seeing in mountain home design?
Continued use of organic materials, but in a more refined state. Clean grained woods, natural stains, and allowing the exterior views to be part of the interior story. Minimalist use of layering multiple materials. Simply using materials to support architectural forms become a strong foundation in interior design. Warmer color palettes that include brown, creams and soft greens are being embraced as foundation neutrals to create a relaxing harmonious space.

Meet Elise Fett, founder of award-winning architecture/engineering firm ELISE FETT & ASSOCIATES. Licensed in California, Nevada and Hawaii, Fett and her team pride themselves on working closely with clients to create beautiful, efficient homes.

What’s one important lesson you have learned in your 30 years as an architect?

While it’s gratifying to have clients hire us because they respect our judgment, the process is a team effort and most efficient when the clients and I work together to design at the site from inception through refinements, including consideration for furniture layout and finishes.

Each person brings ideas and vision to the table, but we realize the preferred aesthetic must come from the client’s perspective, as this is their home. It’s a priority for us that THEY love the finished product. We also suggest the design be respectful to adjacent homeowners so they can live in harmony with their neighbors-not just nature.

In the past several years there has been a design renaissance as the next generation of design professionals begins to flourish and inspire a transition from traditional to a more modern, design-forward mountain aesthetic.

What is the challenge in this transformation?

The evolution of design is inevitable. Steamboat’s rich legacy of uniquely Western heritage is what gives it its charm, and we are very conscious of those roots as we work to embrace a progression in design aesthetics that cohesively melds the old with the new. Steamboat is a very special place to me, and we’re grateful to have a hand in shaping the next generation of architecture and design.

The talented team at BERGLUND ARCHITECTS, located in Edwards, CO, works intimately with clients to create sophisticated designs with a welcoming, casual elegance.

What role does a home’s site play in the creative process of designing a new home?

At Berglund Architects, we have created exceptional “mountain modern” homes for over 19 years. Through a synthesis of local vernacular architecture, beautiful natural materials, modern design influences, and a focus on indoor- outdoor living, we create homes that connect our clients physically, spiritually, and emotionally to the stunning natural environment of the Rocky Mountains.

How have your designs evolved over the years?

Berglund Architects continues to innovate with new technologies and products that push mountain modern expressions while adhering to fundamental design principles. We strive to thoroughly understand our clients’ goals, work with the site to maximize unique features and views, carefully balance proportions and building forms, expose refined structural elements, and connect to the outdoors through floor-to-ceiling windows and doors. Using advanced 3D computer modeling and renderings, the interior architecture of our homes is seamlessly designed and coordinated with the exterior architecture.

How does your talented team work together to create the spectacular homes they are known for?

Berglund Architects has 17 talented, passionate professionals, with Hans Berglund, Adam Gilmer, and Stephanie Lord-Johnson being the firm’s three principals. With our combined 60-plus years of design experience, each principal brings unique expertise and continues to be involved in every project from the conceptual phase through the completion of the design and construction. Our great personal friendships, complementary design process and shared passion for detail are vital to achieving exceptional mountain modern homes that bring people together positively and make a powerful impact on our clients’ lives.

What is your favorite part of the design process?

We collaborate with clients on the early conceptual design of every home, providing a variety of ideas and design options that ultimately get distilled down through our unique Charrette process, where over a few days we spend intensive time on the site engaging and sketching the design live with our client, making quick continual refinements until the design perfectly matches their lifestyle and vision.

Meet dynamic duo Kayce Newell and Jamie Critchlow, Principal Designers at LKW LUXURY INTERIOR DESIGN in Edwards, Colorado, who combine expertise and love of design with their clients’ needs and personal tastes to create beautiful results.

Your firm has experienced phenomenal growth over the last 10 years. Why do you think that is, and where do you hope to go from here?

In a word, relationships. The projects we showcase in our portfolio reflect years spent building relationships with just the right trade sources, industry professionals and, of course, our amazing clients. We work very hard to provide all our clients with a great experience and beautiful end product. The best compliment we can receive is when a client comes back to us for their next project or when we are referred for a new project by another industry professional or past client.

One thing that stands out in your portfolio is how fresh and inviting your designs look. How do you achieve your signature look?

One of the things we were most excited about when we started our company was to work with clients that were ready for a fresh point of view for mountain vacation homes. We wanted to move past some of the mountain design stereotypes that everyone was pretty tired of. A lived-in luxury design that ticks the boxes for style, quality and comfort has been a winning combination for our design team.

The two of you have been partners for over ten years. What strengths do each of you bring to the table?

We regularly joke that we are simultaneously the same and completely different. Jamie
is more reserved, loves cracking the code to creatively solve interior architecture dilemmas and excels at creating the finer details of a design that make all the difference. Kayce is never shy about sharing new ideas to wow clients and excels at finding fresh color schemes and finish packages that are unique to each project.

KASIA KARSKA DESIGN is a boutique design-build and architectural firm located in the Vail Valley that focuses on creating unique environments for their clients’ infinite potential, tranquility and inspiration.

In your opinion, what defines a spectacular result?

Happy clients. Our team is very passionate about the entire process of creating a home that reflects our client’s lifestyle and is perfectly tailored to their needs. We believe our homes should instill us with a sense of peace and calm within the very fiber
of our being. Therefore, we strive to create warm and inviting spaces that truly transform a home into our clients’ personal sanctuary.

What makes the team at Kasia Karska so special?

We all respect each other. We all have different tasks and work in unison with one another. We solve problems together and consult on creative items to honor everyone’s creativity. We enjoy having meals together, which brings an opportunity to exchange points of views on pending issues. We cherish each project as an opportunity to grow and learn.

How does a home’s environment inform your design?

The location of a home is very important as well as the landscape and feel of the area. Working with Vaastu Shastra and Feng Shui principles in mind, we create homes that incorporate features such as expansive windows that create seamless transitions between indoors and out, personal touches that are meaningful to the homeowner and subdued tones, which allow homes to rest in complete harmony with their natural environment.

With over 70 years of combined experience in residential and commercial architecture, the award-winning team at SIPES ARCHITECTS is dedicated to bringing their clients’ dream spaces to life.

In seeking to create excellent design, where does your team find inspiration?

A majority of our clients choose the Vail area because of the breathtaking views and proximity to nature. So, among our many sources of inspiration, evaluating each home’s site is fundamental and a natural starting point. When studying the site with our clients, we identify the direction of views, the sun’s path across the site during different seasons, the primary wind direction(s) and other unique features. We nurture these unique elements to inform and inspire design solutions that ensure our clients feel deeply connected with, and reflected within, their designed space.

How do you accommodate your clients’ visions while at the same time keep your architectural designs fresh?

We value authenticity and look at every project with fresh eyes. We don’t have one particular style because each client and each project is unique. Clients come to us knowing, at minimum, how they want their home to function and feel. Concentrated and engaged dialogue with our clients, combined with decades of experience, give us the tools we need to envision custom designs and tailored renovations that exceed their expectations.

One of the fastest growing states in the country, it’s no wonder that Montana has captured the hearts of visitors and residents alike. Perhaps that’s why it’s also home to a thriving community of talented designers, architects, artists and artisans.

Here, we introduce you to a few of the dedicated professionals inspired by the natural beauty of the landscape and the easy going, live-and-let- live lifestyle of Montana and dedicated to contributing to its future with creative energy and innovation.

Perfectly Balanced

Photo: Kene Sperry Fine Art

Fine art photographer KENE SPERRY’S striking black-and-white images inspire us to recognize our deep connection to nature and one another.

What is the intention behind your deeply moving work?

My intention is to evoke a remembering that we’re deeply connected to nature and interconnected as one; to tap into the childlike wonder and awe that is innate and embedded within every one of us and is truly what keeps us alive. I would love my art to bring a playful, exploratory inquiry which allows us to move back into nature and back into our hearts.

How do you hope people approach your art?

My hope is for the viewer to come from a heart-centered space; to inquire what’s arising in themselves as they move through it; to go inward and feel the work rather than approaching it on a thinking level. As an artist, nature

and animals and spaces are continually showing me that everything is divine and perfect and completely balanced. My work is about tapping into that and remembering that we are all whole and complete as well.

Tell us more about what you mean by “the trickery of photography.”

All photography is about the concealing and revealing of light,
that is, the duality of light and dark. There is a common perception that we all have this deep shadow within us, this dark recess somewhere in our subconscious; we don’t think we are enough. But like photography, there is darkness and light within all of us. And the parts of ourselves we don’t want to look at are the parts we need to shine light on. All our soul wants is to be seen, heard, understood and held.

What is the effect of living with art in our home spaces?

Art is perception, and there is a symbiotic, infinite relationship between art and the viewer. You will have a different relationship with it every time you look at it depending on your energy, your mood and whatever is arising inwardly within you. This infinite relationship with the art and the viewer will travel from home to home as heirloom pieces get passed down to children, family or friends. Art ultimately lives in the heart, which is our eternal home.

Get to know the experienced team at LOCATI ARCHITECTS and you’ll find an extraordinary group of individuals with a wildly diverse range of talents focused on connecting clients to the landscape and each other.

The past few years have felt like a mad scramble across the board in the homebuilding industry. Are you seeing any let-up on the frenzy?

We haven’t seen much of a slowdown in construction in the Rocky Mountain West. What we have seen is that people are more intentional about what they are building, given the current high cost of construction. Focus seems to be on creating long-term, family legacy homes as opposed to building something with the thought of resale. We are also seeing a movement to ranch and rural properties, with folks investing both in the creation of a family home and the conservation of the land that surrounds it.

Along with this, have you observed a shift in homeowners’ priorities? What seems to be at the top of homeowners’ priority lists these days?

There is renewed interest in building responsibly. This ranges from simple things like a reasonably-sized home to more complex considerations like thermal efficiency, energy independence, and integration of intelligent control and management to have a better performing home that is easier to own long-term. We are even seeing the term “inheritable” home to suggest that investing in good design and lasting homebuilding techniques will allow the home to carry for generations as the host of family activity.

Why does quality stone matter?

We always say, “Natural stone is just that—natural. Its imperfections are what make it perfect.” With that in mind we work with the best quarries around the world to inspect these perfectly imperfect blocks before they ship them across the globe. This allows us to provide fabricators with a material they can work with to create amazing outcomes.

Where do you find such an amazing selection of stone for your inventory?

Cory Ellsworth, owner of our family-run company, is our curator. He has been in the stone industry for over 30 years, and he’s damn good. With a passion for original design, skill, and imagination that runs deeper than trends, the team at DE REUS ARCHITECTS uses core architectural and design principles to create exceptional solutions for inspired living.

How do your designs incorporate the concept of “quiet luxury”?

The typical mountain home in our region is generally formulaic and somewhat trendy: monumental stone walls, heavy timber framing, cathedral ceilings, walls of glass, ornate detailing, etc. Our work is decidedly more bespoke and shaped around the distinct character of our clients and the conditions important to them.

The designs are crafted and shaped to experience the land, the harmonious compositions and layering of architectural elements, and the beauty of natural materials. These are nested qualities that we refer to as “quiet luxury”, which we believe to have meaningful and timeless authenticity.

Describe your unique niche in the market.

Our clients aren’t drawn to us simply because of the quality of the house that will be their home: they also enjoy the process of making architecture. We make a point to invite them into the work and participate deeply in shaping their house. They know the nature of our practice is to produce homes that are each clearly unique.

Clients appreciate that we come into each project with an open mind and without preconceptions or personal agendas. That mindset is the foundation of our practice, and it has resulted in a history of homes that are profoundly personal expressions of our clients.

Meet Sarah Latham, founder and principal of LATHAM INTERIORS, a full-service interior design studio in Ketchum, Idaho, focused on creating thoughtful, beautiful, and innovative designs.

What, in your opinion, is the secret to fresh, yet timeless, interior design?

One way to embody a timeless feel is to use natural materials whenever possible—stone, wood, daylight—all are perfectly created by Mother Nature and inherently timeless. The more natural your selections, the more staying power they will have over the years. The freshness in design comes from the layout and the details—shapes, colors and textures, and using those natural elements in unique and interesting ways.

What inspires your team’s designs?

Our greatest sources of inspiration are nature and our experiences in travel. We love to incorporate unexpected elements from different cultures, food, community, and art into our designs. In addition, we tap into natural inspiration on almost every project we do. The environment around our projects provides a natural connection to the selections we make to enhance our clients’ interior environments.

What’s new and exciting in your online curated furniture and decór collections?

We are always adding new items we love to our online shop! We’re passionate about what we do but can’t always spend time with each homeowner, so our online shop allows them to purchase directly from our curated collections. There’s always something fun to find! Right now we’re loving the Wildhorse end table made from natural honed marble— such a perfect silhouette for a distinctive addition to any room.

LIV SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY

Nikki Pulitzer

Meet real estate professional Nikki Pulitzer, who combines creativity and technical know-how with a passion for the Crested Butte community to help connect people with the mountain home of their dreams.

What is it about Crested Butte that makes it such a special place?

Hands down, I would say the people because they come together and form a community inspired by the friendships and values that make this valley a one-of-a-kind place. This community is united in its commitment to taking care of each other and preserving Crested Butte’s exceptional resources, including open spaces, ranch land, wildlife, and national forests that encompass a rich history and wholesome authenticity.

What do you love best about the field of real estate?

The ability to help people find their dream homes for themselves and their families fills my cup to the fullest. My clients and I are captivated by the diverse architecture to draw from including historic ranch properties to modern contemporary homes. Ultimately, I am honored to assist them in finding their perfect mountain home, creating new memories with loved ones, and falling in love with Crested Butte, just as my family did.

What kind of experience can clients expect when they work with you?

I work mindfully with each client, building a personal, trust-driven relationship connecting them to the community, culture, and splendor of this extraordinary place. My experience with water rights, historic encroachments, and constantly evolving building guidelines paired with strong relationships with local tradesmen and industry professionals ensures my clients are guided seamlessly from the moment they discover Crested Butte to the day they call it home.

ARTISAN RUG GALLERY

Screenshot 2023 03 02 At 120407 Pm

Meet Jeff Deutsch, owner of Artisan Rug Gallery, whose decades of experience and knowledge provide clients with the finest weavings from around the world.

What kind of impact does a high-quality rug have on a room’s design?

The rug is a fundamental element of design. It sets the tone for the entire room with color and pattern. The rug evokes an emotion that connects all other design aspects. Many top designers use the rug as the basis for all that follows, just as a home is built with a foundation first, so it is with the rug for a room.

How long has Artisan Rug Gallery been serving the Crested Butte community?

We have been serving the Crested Butte area on Elk Ave since I returned from overseas with my first collection in 1990. In 2015, we opened our flagship showroom in the RINO district of Denver from which we serve other mountain towns as well.

Tell us about the scope of offerings your gallery provides.

In a situation where a client has all the other pieces of a room in place, we have a breadth of offerings with nuance and beauty for any design need. We realize that trends come and go so we focus on the timeless quality of classic design. Even with our modern rugs there is always an element of history and artistic value, whether tribal, traditional or a combination of both.

SOMRAK CONCEPT + STRUCTURE SOMRAK INTERIORS

Mountford20

Meet Ben and Kate Somrak, the husband-wife team at Somrak Concept + Structure, a boutique Crested Butte design-build firm committed to delivering luxury custom homes of exceptional quality.

Your family has deep roots in the Gunnison Valley. How does that inform your business?

Ben grew up in Crested Butte and our children are 7th-generation locals! We genuinely care about our imprint on the valley and our inspiration comes from years of living, growing and loving here.
Designing and building custom homes at 9,000 feet requires a commitment to the best in craftsmanship and a discerning eye for design. We are dedicated to the highest quality standards, ensuring that our projects have impact for generations to come.

Please share Somrak’s mission with our readers.

When we incorporate organic elements from our own natural environment, we are discernibly happier and more at ease. We love creating spaces that evoke joy and provide a sense of security; homes that nurture families and celebrate the miracle of experiencing this slice of heaven
on earth. Functionality is our primary goal and good design always follows.

What is the greatest advantage of going with a design-build firm?

The marriage of design-build under one roof is a symbiotic relationship, a one-stop shop, that works in efficiency and value at every stage of the project. When working with us, clients find a genuine, heart-centered connection with their builder, designer and their new mountain home.

SHM ARCHITECTS

El Nido 5522

The team at SHM Architects, a boutique design studio founded in 2005, believes creating beautiful places with purpose requires two things: passion and time.

How do SHM homes fit into the Crested Butte vernacular?

An SHM home isn’t necessarily a particular style but more of a response to the desires of our clients and the nuances of the land that make up the story of how the home will occupy its place. This may solve for logical needs in a mountain environment such as day lighting with views and snow protection, but also solve for emotional needs of respite and fellowship. Our job is to listen and understand the collective “story” of the home and create an architectural expression our clients fall in love with.

What lies at the foundation of your designs?

Good design strategies—things like form, scale, natural light, etc.—are patterns utilized for both contemporary and traditional homes that capture timelessness. We work to create something that transcends styles 30 to 50 years in the future.

Describe your creative process when working with a new client.

Our client’s unique interests, hobbies, and obsessions are our first concern and our creative process begins with listening, understanding, and then interpreting their needs into a one- of-a-kind design solution. Communicating through sketches, storyboards, and photo-realistic renderings and interactive models leave little surprise in the end.

CRESTED BUTTE WINE + FOOD FESTIVAL

Kissidugu Foundation

The Crested Butte Wine + Food Festival, now in its 13th year, is the biggest arts-driven wine and food festival in Colorado. Running July 19-23, 2023, the experience promises to delight your senses and expand your horizons.

Tell us a bit about the history and purpose of the CB Wine + Food Festival.

The Crested Butte Wine + Food Festival is the annual fundraiser for the Crested Butte Center for the Arts, the premier arts nonprofit in the Gunnison Valley. The Festival funds year-round access to arts and cultural experiences for all residents of the Western Slope. We feed more than ourselves at the CB Wine + Food Festival, we feed our future – expanding the horizons of our rural community.

What are a few of the festival’s main features?

The heart of the festival is the Grand Tasting showcasing a multitude of wine and spirits suppliers. The Festival also features winemaker dinners helmed by James Beard award-winning chefs and entertainers from around the world, art-inspired wine tastings and adventures, and a wide range of educational seminars for the novice and connoisseur alike.

Tell us about the Festival theme.

This year’s theme is SALT, an element which transforms everything it touches. Essential to cooking, salt preserves and enhances flavor, just as art captures and enlivens the human experience. Salt encapsulates the salt-of-the-earth Crested Butte spirit—essential, a little bit gritty, original—folks “who came for skiing and stayed for the vibe.”

WILDER ON THE TAYLOR

Shaw Home And Guest Cabin By James Ray Spahn

Nestled alongside the Gunnison National Forest, Wilder on the Taylor is an idyllic community dedicated to preserving, protecting and perpetuating the Gunnison-Crested Butte Valley’s culture of ranching and Colorado’s outdoor mountain lifestyle.

Tell us a bit about Wilder’s rich history.

The picturesque 2,100+ acres that make up Wilder on the Taylor were homesteaded starting in 1893 as a hay and cattle ranch in a sweet location along two miles of the Taylor River between Crested Butte and Almont. In 2007, upon hearing that land might be turned into a golf course surrounded by a too-crowded housing development, Lewis Shaw and Tom Swift joined forces to preserve the unique character of the ranch by continuing haying and cattle operations, restoring historic barns and structures, and selling 35-acre homesites with one-acre building envelopes.

And today?

Sixteen years later, there is a vibrant community of homeowners at Wilder and a handful of homesites available. A huge riverside lawn and safari-style base camp are prime gathering spots for homeowners and their guests to share stories about fishing, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and more on-site and beyond. Ranch managers, a fishing guide and concierge/chef facilitate unmatched experiences.

What makes the Wilder community truly unique?

The ranch has grown over the years and has involved a rich cast of individuals, but what remains true is a steadfast dedication to being good stewards of this special place. Wilder is devoted to helping protect wildlife corridors and forest health and supporting community causes, like donating the land and helping make the new Taylor Canyon Fire Station a reality.

FARMER PAYNE ARCHITECTS

Jh Row House Dog

The talented design team at Farmer Payne Architects masterfully balances the fundamentals of design with quality, simplicity and personal collaboration resulting in thoughtfully designed spaces that enrich the lives of their clients.

Tell us about your team’s young, fresh approach.

Our design team is a fun group of individuals. We really enjoy working together and pushing each other and our designs. There is depth within our studios and a vast array of experiences (furniture design, construction, hospitality) to draw from. Our clients benefit from having multiple perspectives as we are better able to anticipate how a home or space should feel and function. This leads to thoughtfully curated designs, specifically catered to each individual client.

Are there common themes that unite your work?

Our spaces are designed to nurture people. That’s why we spend so much time getting to know our clients and what they need to live life to the fullest. We design around their lifestyle and focus our attention to the finer details. Our designs are proportional and low maintenance. Every selection is made with the next 30 years in mind. We ask ourselves how will this space, this appliance, this cabinet, serve our client’s lives in 30 years? We create legacy homes.

Your firm embraces a collaborative process. Tell us more.

Understanding it takes a village to bring a quality product to fruition, we focus on what we are good at and enjoy working with other professionals who do the same. It is crucial for the client experience to have a well-orchestrated team to execute their vision. Knowing it is all about relationships has opened up multiple markets for us.

How do your contemporary designs tackle the challenges unique to the Mountain West?

Every ski town has its unique characteristics. However, the underlying attractions and challenges are similar. Our success in mountain communities can be attributed to knowing the community, understanding harsh climates, building in remote areas, and creating designs that complement the local vernacular. We apply the best building science practices and use contemporary applications to create architecture that is beautiful and timeless.

RUMOR DESIGN

Rumor Lindsey House 09 21 20 Entry To Livingroom Tight 110mb Copy

The talented team at Rumor Design puts a fresh spin on mountain modern interiors that embrace Steamboat’s relaxed lifestyle in a sophisticated, functional way.

What serves as inspiration for your fresh, fashionable designs?

Our team is inspired by new trends, creative arts, nature, and especially travel. Travel is so important because it takes us out of our comfort zone and inspires us to see, taste, and try new things. Our designers inspire each other as well. We strive to make each design different from the last with new materials available.

What is your team’s favorite part of the design process?

The initial brainstorming and concept creation is where we let our creative imaginations run wild. This is an important time to identify clients’ style and, we like to think, where the magic happens. We define spaces, flow and function, and make specific furniture, lighting and tile selections that make the overall space come together.

What advice do you have for creating a timeless yet modern aesthetic?

Keep your look eclectic with a variety of styles in your furniture collection to keep your design interesting and timeless. Include a variation from different cultures and time periods. Layer neutral basics with textures and colors that change over time and with seasons. Mix a variety of different patterned fabrics throughout to create a unique, eye-catching look.

MICHAEL J.K. OLSEN ARCHITECTS

Residence 02

With nearly 30 years of experience in the Steamboat community, the team at Michael J.K. Olsen Architects thrives on the challenge of creating innovative designs that bring their clients’ ideas to life.

How do you help clients navigate the sometimes formidable processes of designing a home?

The design process can be exciting and yet sometimes overwhelming. We support our clients in two ways: by leveraging 3D technology and breaking down the design process into smaller, digestible bites. In this manner, our clients stay engaged so the end product meets their expectations.

How does your firm maintain its “passion for designing architecture that enlivens the spirit while being environmentally sustainable”?

The primary way we accomplish this is through the contextual nature of our designs. That is, architecture that reflects the forms, details, and regional qualities of the surrounding landscape. This means creating homes that fit into the environment, not building something that contrasts and feels out of place. We work with clients to define specific sustainability goals and identify areas that both resonate and fit within their budget.

As a longtime resident and design professional, how have you seen Steamboat’s design style evolve?

Trends change, and especially in the Steamboat area, design styles have definitely morphed. Most significantly, the local design style has moved from a very traditional, heavy, mountain wood and/or log type to a lighter, open, airy contemporary vernacular.

MARSDEN ARCHITECTS, INC.

Helm Print 36

Meet architect Ryan Marsden, whose boutique firm takes a holistic approach to the design process, giving each project the hands-on attention and enthusiasm required to create exceptional architecture.

Your firm has deep ties to Colorado. How does it feel to return to your roots?

My roots run deep in Routt County as a fifth-generation Coloradoan. My great, great-grandparents were homesteaders and my father has been a custom home builder in Steamboat since 1976. In addition, four of our nine team members are fellow CU Buffs. We are fortunate to have work all across Colorado from Steamboat to Crested Butte and Telluride and are extremely grateful for our story to come full circle.

What sort of expertise do you bring to the table that benefits the landscape of Steamboat Springs?

The Steamboat vernacular is deeply influenced by agriculture and western heritage. The exciting part of our job is to understand these roots and take it up a notch for the next generation of design and architecture. We cherish and value aligning with local contractors, suppliers and trade partners. For us, tapping into local resources and talent is an automatic investment in the community. The relationships we foster go beyond business—they turn into friendships. And that creates a fun and meaningful process for both us and our clients.

Meet award-winning Tahoe City-based architect Todd Gordon Mather, whose timeless designs are custom-crafted in harmony with Tahoe’s spectacular natural environment.

What is the key to your boutique architecture firm’s success?

Maintaining a small firm allows me to give every project the individual attention it deserves. I work one-on-one with each of my clients through every step of the process to achieve exceptional architecture that fits their vision.

How are you able to help your clients envision their homes’ designs?

Many firms use 3-D computer models to show clients their projects on screen, but we take it one step further. Our unique Virtual Reality studio gives clients a fully-immersive experience that allows them to walk through and around their house at full scale to experience the size and feel of each space and even check out the views through the windows.

Your portfolio is impressively diverse. What are you working on right now?

Most of my work is within the Lake Tahoe Basin and Truckee. However, we are currently designing homes in Park City, Vail, and Hawaii, as well. With multiple awards and magazine features for our “Phoenix Rising” A-frame, we are developing other unique A-frames in Colorado, Big Bear, Mt. Hood, Whitefish, Park City, Sandpoint and even Texas.

DANIEL FRAIMAN CONSTRUCTION

The talented team at Daniel Fraiman Construction thrives on the challenge of unique projects on both the California and Nevada sides of the Sierra Nevada.

How has your firm evolved over the past two decades?

From a small crew building custom homes to over fifty construction professionals and growing, we’ve expanded our portfolio to include large-scale remodels, modular/prefab construction, developments and commercial remodels. DESIGNBAR INTERIOR DESIGN

Sarah

Meet Sarah Ray-Fay, Owner and Principal Interior Designer of DesignBar Interior Design, whose inspirational design approach is redefining mountain living.

How does your experience as an accomplished sculptor and painter inform your design process?

I see a direct connection between having an art background and working as a designer. Not only do I focus on looking at form for what it is, but how that form affects the space around it: shadows, focal points, positive & negative space, etc.. In painting, how colors play off of each other, and sometimes the absence of color can be a game-changer. The same goes for designing spaces.

Would you say DesignBar has a signature style?

I’m proud to say we do not have a signature style at DesignBar. Our talented team of experienced designers tailor their designs to the unique needs and desires of our varied clientele.

What is the greatest advantage of working with DesignBar?

We are literally a ‘one-stop shop’ for design services and decor services. We have a beautiful furniture showroom where clients can come see and touch the merchandise. We even have a 4000 square foot warehouse to receive, inspect, and professionally deliver all of their furnishings, fixtures, draperies, and art.

RENO TAHOE INTERNATIONAL ART SHOW

Natural State By Kimbo Frankesm

Natural State by Kimbo Franke

Meet Kevin O’Keefe and Briana Dolan, the dynamic father/daughter duo on a mission to put Reno on the map as a destination for arts and culture.

How did your quest to promote the art community of the Reno Tahoe area begin?

Unbeknownst to many, the Reno Tahoe region has long been home to a significant fine arts community. The natural beauty of Lake Tahoe and the majestic Sierra Nevada range have historically been a magnet for artists and creators. We wanted to embrace and promote this immense pool of talent and showcase the artistic spirit of the region in a way that had never been done before. Especially with the significant growth in the area as a result of the pandemic, Reno is rising as a thriving cosmopolitan center.

You have an exciting event coming up. Tell us all about it.

The inaugural Reno Tahoe International Art Show is the region’s first-ever international art show and a celebration of fine arts and emerging design. Running September 8-11, 2022 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, the show will shine a spotlight on both local artists and Reno as a burgeoning artistic and cultural destination.

Presenting 200 regional artists and 50 national and international galleries, the RTIA show will showcase several major features including the First Nations, Indigenous Peoples exhibit, large-scale Burning Man sculptures and award-winning short film screenings.

The RTIA show will run concurrently with the 41st annual Reno Great Balloon Race and feature a citywide celebration of art and design with a music festival, awards program and associated events around Reno and Tahoe.

MARSDEN ARCHITECTS

Clearcreek Reddingway Print 3

The talented team at Marsden Architects focuses on creativity, quality and communication in order to create architecturally inspiring homes that respond to the dynamic needs of their clients.

How do you customize the client experience at Marsden Architects?

We’ve developed a questionnaire that we give to clients early in the design process designed to help them think through their wish list and brainstorm new ideas. This gives us valuable insight to begin our design approach and interpret clients’ ideas into a one-of-a-kind vision tailored perfectly to them and how they live.

How would you say homeowners’ priorities have changed over the past couple of years?

Priorities like home gyms have evolved into what we have termed “spaunas,” or spa/sauna areas that include a steam room, sauna, plunge pools, hot tub, and resort-style lounge areas for the ultimate health and wellness experience at home.

ASPEN LEAF INTERIORS

Welling Construction, Aspen Leaf Interior Design

Meet Marcio Decker, founder and principal designer at Aspen Leaf Interiors, who has been designing timeless and elegant homes throughout the Lake Tahoe, Reno and San Francisco areas since 2004.

In your opinion, what is the secret to creating timeless design?

First of all, quality. High-quality materials, finishes, furnishings and art will truly endure the test of time. In a timeless design, the era of time in which it was created is not evident. That’s not to say you can’t include current styles and innovations; why not have the best smart home technology, the newest fixtures, surfaces and green products? We aspire to timeless design by incorporating some of the latest design elements while creating unique solutions for each client. This is how our spaces differ, stand out and truly last.

Marcio’s award-winning designs have been recognized most recently at both the 2020 and 2021 ASID Andyz Awards.
